In this series a family of the rural community El Pie has made an altar for La Lupita as they all gather to eat, play, and celebrate. December 12th in Mexico is the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It is believed that on this day in 1531, soon after the Spanish conquest, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego. She spoke to him in Nahuatl, his indigenous language, and as a result of her appearance her image was divinely reproduce on his cloak. Thereafter, millions of indigenous people were converted to Catholicism. Today, 80 per cent of the Mexican population is considered Catholic, and even in the most remote villages this day is colorfully celebrated
